How to Care for Houseplants in a Heatwave

Scorcher Outside? Here’s How to Keep Your Houseplants Cool, Calm & Collected

Summer heatwaves can take their toll — not just on us, but on our leafy friends too. Prolonged high temperatures can quickly lead to droopy leaves, dry soil, and stressed roots.

Whether you're at home or away, here are some practical tips to help your plants not just survive, but thrive, during a hot spell.

1. Move Plants Out of Direct Sunlight

South-facing windows can become plant ovens in extreme heat. If you notice scorched or crispy leaves, it’s time to act. What to do: Move sensitive plants away from hot windowsills or draw sheer curtains to diffuse the light. East- or north-facing rooms are ideal during a heatwave.

2. Water Deeply, But Not Too Often

It’s tempting to water every day in the heat — but overwatering can be just as harmful as underwatering. What to do: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. Ensure excess water drains freely from the pot. For larger plants, this might mean every 2–3 days; smaller pots may need more frequent checks.

Bonus Tip: Early morning or evening is best for watering — it allows roots to soak up moisture before the hottest part of the day.

3. Mist with Caution

Many houseplants, especially tropical ones, enjoy a humidity boost — but in hot weather, misting can backfire if done in full sun. What to do: Mist in the early morning or place a tray of water and pebbles near your plant to increase local humidity. Grouping plants together can also create a more humid microclimate.

4. Skip the Fertiliser

During very hot weather, plants slow their growth — and fertilising can stress them further. What to do: Put the plant food away until temperatures return to normal. Focus on hydration, not nutrition.

5. Give Leaves a Wipe

Dusty leaves can block sunlight and slow down photosynthesis — and in hot weather, plants need all the help they can get. What to do: Gently wipe large-leafed plants with a damp cloth to keep them looking (and functioning) their best.

6. Going Away? Prep Before You Travel

If you’re heading off on holiday during a heatwave, a little prep goes a long way. What to do:

  • Water thoroughly the day you leave.

  • Move plants to a cool, shaded room.

  • Consider placing them in the bathtub with a layer of wet newspaper or towels underneath.
