There’s a reason the Monstera deliciosa — also known as the Swiss cheese plant — has become a darling of interior design. With its dramatic, fenestrated leaves and jungle-like energy, this tropical stunner adds instant character to any room. But how do you keep it thriving, not just surviving?
At Leaves & Dreams, we care for hundreds of Monsteras in homes just like yours. Here’s our simple guide to keeping your Monstera healthy, happy, and Instagram-ready.
☀️ Light: Bright but Indirect
Monsteras love bright, indirect light. Think near a window with filtered sun or a well-lit corner. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, but too little light will cause leggy growth and fewer splits.
Pro tip: If your Monstera is leaning toward the window, rotate it every couple of weeks for even growth.
💧 Water: Let the Soil Breathe
Monsteras prefer a balance — not soggy, not bone-dry. Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil feel dry. Typically, this means once a week in spring and summer, and a little less in winter.
Warning signs: Yellowing leaves? You may be overwatering. Crispy brown tips? Time to give it a drink.
🧴 Humidity & Temperature
Native to tropical forests, Monsteras adore humidity. A well-placed humidifier or regular misting will do wonders, especially in winter when central heating dries out the air.
They’re happiest between 18°C–27°C — so keep them away from draughts, radiators, or cold windows.
🌱 Feeding: A Monthly Treat
During the growing season (spring through early autumn), feed with a liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month. It’s like a green smoothie for your plant — it boosts growth and encourages lush new leaves.
🪴 Repotting: Give It Room to Grow
Monsteras like being slightly root-bound, but they’ll need a bigger pot every 1–2 years. Look for roots poking out of the bottom or slow growth as your cue.
Use a chunky, well-draining soil mix — we love adding bark, perlite, and coconut coir for that airy jungle floor vibe.
🧽 Leaf Care: Let It Shine
Dust and grime can block light and slow photosynthesis. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every couple of weeks. Bonus: it makes the leaves glossy and vibrant.
